Watershed Forum Highlights Forest Conservation Efforts in Agusan del Sur

Local stakeholders gathered at the Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology (ASSCAT) Sports and Socio-Cultural Center on November 29, 2024, for “Watershed: Feast for the Forest.” The event served as a platform to promote forest and watershed conservation while emphasizing ASSCAT’s role as a hub for environmental advocacy in the region.

Activities included lectures by environmental experts, open forums, and booth displays showcasing innovative approaches to forest restoration and sustainable practices. An on-the-spot poster-making contest provided a creative avenue for participants to express their commitment to environmental preservation.

Earlier in the day, participants took part in a tree planting and growing activity in Bunawan. This effort, aimed at restoring degraded areas, reflected the broader goal of promoting sustainable watershed management within the Simulao Watershed.

The event was organized by the DENR and CENRO Bunawan, in collaboration with LGU Bunawan and ASSCAT, with support from the Provincial Government of Agusan del Sur. Key personalities present included CENR Officer Jerome Albia, Bunawan Mayor Hon. Sylvia B. Elorde, represented by Administrator Marvin Mique, ASSCAT President Dr. Joy C. Capistrano, Vice Presidents, Directors, and faculty researchers from ASSCAT, along with representatives from various sectors.

ASSCAT’s active involvement highlights its growing commitment to environmental sustainability, aligning with its institutional goals to ASCEND.

The event is part of ongoing efforts to address deforestation and restore ecosystems, particularly in critical watersheds like the Agusan River Basin.
