ASSCAT Joins Bunawan’s Celebration of Heritage and
Harvest at Haw-an Festival Opening

Bunawan, Agusan del Sur | June 19, 2025 — The Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology (ASSCAT), led by College President Dr. Joy C. Capistrano, joined the Municipality of Bunawan in celebrating the formal opening of the 66th Araw ng Bunawan and 23rd Haw-an Festival, held today at the Bunawan Municipal Ground.

The day’s celebration commenced with an ecumenical service, offering a solemn moment of thanksgiving and reflection among local officials, stakeholders, and guests. This was followed by the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected municipal officials, formally ushering in a new chapter of local leadership. ASSCAT extended its congratulations to the new set of officials and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting LGU-led initiatives, particularly in agriculture, education, and inclusive community transformation.

The program then transitioned into the Opening Proper cum Farmers’ and Indigenous Peoples’ Day, highlighting Bunawan’s deep-rooted agricultural heritage and cultural pride. Among the key segments was the recognition of outstanding farmers’ associations and top harvest achievers, honoring individuals and groups whose efforts have significantly shaped the town’s agricultural progress.

Adding cultural vibrance to the event, the ASSCAT Saliao Performing Arts Guild delivered a dynamic performance during the opening salvo, showcasing the college’s sustained support for heritage preservation and creative expression.

The celebration also featured the much-awaited “Sadsad tu Bunawan” Theatrical Dance Contest, an inter-barangay cultural showdown that brought Bunawan’s folklore and history to life through vibrant music, dance, and storytelling.

Surrounding the venue were agri-booths creatively mounted by each barangay, featuring local produce, native delicacies, and innovations in agriculture — a visual and flavorful tribute to the municipality’s farming roots.

The weeklong celebration officially began on June 18 with the Mutya ng Bunawan 2025 Pageant, where Ms. Charlene Calingawan, the reigning Ms. ASSCAT 2025, was crowned the new Mutya ng Bunawan. Her victory was a proud moment for the ASSCAT community, embodying the values of grace, intelligence, and cultural identity.

The festivities will continue until June 21, featuring more cultural presentations, civic activities, and community engagements that reflect Bunawan’s enduring spirit and collective aspirations.

“We are honored to witness and support Bunawan’s continuing journey of cultural pride and agricultural progress,” said Dr. Capistrano. “As an institution committed to people-centered development, ASSCAT reaffirms its role as a partner in empowering communities through education, research, and engagement.”
